Did you watch the stars fall Thursday night? Was the peak of the Perseid as glorious as promised? I missed it. Somehow, in the middle of the market push, work seemed like an acceptable excuse to sleep through the moonless hours of morning, but of course, that was just a pretext for laziness. There's always work and more work, with or without a full night's rest. A once in a decade meteor shower is definitely worth the loss of a little sleep, though I was only able to admit so on the other side of Friday's double shift. Anyways, I hope you were outside and awake to the wonder yesterday morning while I was buried deep in dreams.
Instead of waking early, I've been staying up late this week processing fruit. Summer harvest feels like a reckless tumble towards autumn, the fruits flashing by almost too fast to see. Pie cherries, here and gone. Raspberries, blueberries, apricots. I made my last fig foray this week, and I hope to harvest my winter's worth of Himalayan blackberries tomorrow. The early apples and pears are littering the yards in my neighborhood. Soon hazelnuts and quince will be ready, and then, a moment later, the winter rain will close around us once more. Too fast! Too soon! I need more hours to gather in and put up the summer's bright flavors, but the hours, like the season's bounty, keep slipping away. That bounty is on display this week in three seasonal galettes: basil peach, cardamom pear, and roasted tomato & plum. Also in the lineup: Mountain Rye, Sunflower Rye (100% rye), Red & White, and Wild & Seedy. Plus cookies, scones, etc. Off to market. See you soon! Sophie P.S.
