Armchair Walker

It seems, as the days lengthen and the work grows apace, that I'm becoming an armchair walker. Sundays, perhaps, I'll go on a hike or a walk across town, but the rest of the week my schedule keeps me tied to the speed of my bicycle. And so on the floor by my bed you'll find Wanderlust and In the Land of Giants. On my phone is the audiobook On Trails, which I listen to while standing at my work bench in the dead air of the kitchen for six, ten, fourteen hours, so far from the sky and open spaces that the words feel like a dream. Or the kitchen feels like a dream, colorless and loud under the flickering fluorescent lights. Or maybe I just feel disembodied: hands to grasp and shape, forearms, shoulders, and back to mix the lift the dough, but my legs might as well be a chair to prop up my torso for all the work they do.
